GREAT News for Librarians and Info Pros
Filed under: Uncategorized — Robert Berkman @ 3:05 pm

This isn’t a blog about the Internet, libraries and librarians, one reason being because there are so many superb ones already, but I do need to say that this is one particularly outstanding piece of news for the profession, and therefore quite noteworthy for all serious researchers, including business researchers.

With Jenny now in a key newly created position at the American Library Association (read her job description!), to put her ideas in place, perhaps there is reason after all to be optimistic that good things can and still happen in this world. What next? A solution to global warming? The end of the Iraq war? A strong, passionate candidate to lead the Democrats in ‘08? The world seems wide open with possibilities now…

Blogs in Market Research
Filed under: Uncategorized — Robert Berkman @ 6:02 pm

Looks like I’m going to be working on a new book, for publication in early ‘07, on how businesses can effectively use blogs when conducting market research….This is a topic I’ve touched on often in The Information Advisor, as well as in presentations, so it should be a pretty natural transition to a book.

So if any of you have any experiences, suggestions, comments or cautions–please pass them along. I’m thinking of developing a Wiki on this too…

Thanks…

The SLA Conference Blog: Up and Running
Filed under: Uncategorized — Robert Berkman @ 12:19 pm

If you haven’t checked it out already, you should be aware that the SLA 2006 Conference Blog
is up and running. It’s a great resource, not only for keeping up with what some of the conference presenters are saying during this week, but to detect the hot topics currently in the industry (apparently a session on using RSS was so popular the conference had to move the event to another room), and for its listing of “Blogs of Note”.

Conference blogging has turned out to be one of the most practically useful applications of blogs as a research tool. Word is that there will be a forthcoming book from Information Today soon on this topic co-authored by Steven M. Cohen of LibraryStuff and Marydee Ojala, editor of Online magazine, and blogger at Online Insider. I’m very much looking forward to seeing it.

SEC EDGAR Enhancements
Filed under: Uncategorized — Robert Berkman @ 1:52 pm

Speaking of BUSLIB, this nugget of info that was shared on the list this past week is worth passing along. It was posted by Gary Klein of the library at Wilamette University in Salem:

*************************************************************************
BUSLIB-L readers who work with USA publicly traded company
information might want to take note of these improvements.

While using the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission’s EDGAR search
engine this morning, I noticed a little yellow “new” flag indicating that
the SEC has added 2 new services to its EDGAR database.

http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/webusers.htm

BETA FULL TEXT SEARCH is listed under the category of General Purpose
Search tools with either a Basic search form, or Advanced search form:

> allows you to search the full text of EDGAR filings from the last two
> years. The full text of a filing includes all data in the filing as well
> as all attachments to the filing. We are still developing this feature,
> and we plan to enhance it based on user feedback. Please email your
> comments and suggestions for improvement to textsearch@sec.gov.

SEC’s EDGAR now also offers EFFECTIVENESS NOTICES under the categroy
of Special Purpose Searches:

> The following Securities Act registration statements and post-effective
> amendments were declared effective on the most recently completed
> business day. You may also view notices from this and previous days…
This listing contains the most recent filings for the current official
> filing date (including filings made after the 5:30 pm deadline on the
> previous filing day). Filings may be made Monday through Friday (except
> for U.S. Federal Holidays).
